Anish Kapoor, renowned sculptor, 1991 Turner Prize winner and Royal Academician, is regarded as one of the most influential and pioneering sculptors of his generation. This major solo exhibition contains a number of signature works from different moments in his career as well as newly created pieces, including a major sculpture in the RA Courtyard entitled Spheres. An Indian-born artist of Iraqi and Jewish descent, his cultural background and memories inform his work.
The centrepiece of the exhibition is the monumental Svayambh. The piece is tailored to the architecture of the RA’s Main Galleries, having the appearance of a train that moves almost imperceptibly on sunken rails. Covered in a thick red wax, it moves silently from one gallery to another leaving a residue in its wake.
Also included are some of his early pigment works, which use colour and texture to create a profound spiritual engagement with the viewer, and his reflective pieces, which explore the use of mirrored surfaces to encompass the viewer within the work itself.
This is a must-see exhibition for those exploring the use of shape, form, colour, texture and the sensory qualities of materials to express emotion, creation and sensation in 3D sculpture.
