Celebrating art for and by the visually impaired
and challenging perceptions of artistic vision.
Sense & Sensuality 2006
Bankside Gallery, London September - October 2006
Richard Attenborough Centre, Leicester November – December 2006

The art world’s ultimate taboo is banished in the acclaimed exhibition.

Sense & Sensuality 2006 built on the success of the inaugural exhibition while extending its reach. The exhibition ran for three weeks at the Bankside Gallery, London, a venue benefiting from its close proximity to Tate Modern; and for eight weeks at the Richard Attenborough Centre, University of Leicester. 62 artists (30% of which were visually impaired and/or described themselves as having a disability) were chosen for exhibition from over thousands of entries. The exhibition received over 20,000 visitors in the London venue in three weeks (20% of our visitors described themselves as having a disability). The overwhelming response from BlindArt’s visitor questionnaires was “liberating” and “inspiring”.

Professor David Ekserdjian,
Trustee, National Gallery and Head of Department, History of Art and Film, University of Leicester said on BlindArt.

“Sight is one of those things we tend to take for granted, at least until such times as it lets us down. As an art historian with naturally good sight, I always felt rather sorry for people who had to juggle with glasses, and having to wear them was the worst visual inconvenience I anticipated having to face. Then, eight years ago, and from one second to the next, I lost the sight of an eye, and over time was obliged to accept that it would not return. Clearly, by comparison with the visual impairments of many of the artists involved in BlindArt – and indeed of visitors to its annual Exhibition – I have got off lightly (although my tennis is not what it was). Nevertheless, and perhaps naturally enough, this experience has made me particularly aware of such problems, and especially interested in the cases of artists and art historians who have been similarly monocular… the name BlindArt does not shy away from the worst case scenario, but even here other senses – and above all touch – can come into play.”
