Celebrating art for and by the visually impaired
and challenging perceptions of artistic vision.
Sense & Sensuality 2006
Interactive exhibition set to banish art’s final taboo

14th September until 8th October 2006

The revolutionary contemporary art exhibition Sense & Sensuality, will be launching its second annual, multisensory art experience at Bankside Gallery in September.

This spectacular art extravaganza, organised by pioneering charity BlindArt, features paintings, sculptureand installations that aim to dispel the misconception that visual ability is essential to artistic excellence and challenging the art establishment’s final taboo – touch.

Sense & Sensuality 2006 encourages visitors to get ‘hands on’ with all the works of art on display – exploring not only visually, but through all five senses, breaking down the barriers between art and spectator.

The panel of judges for the nationwide competition comprise artist Marc Quinn, art critic Richard Cork, Catherine Hillis from the RNIB, art advisor Manfredi della Gherardesca, visually impaired artist Gary Sargeant, head of sculpture at Royal College of Art Professor Glynn Williams and Sheri Khayami, founder of BlindArt.

Sheri, who is visually impaired herself added: “The only stipulation for submitting artists is that they must allow their work to be touched, breaking through traditional hierarchies and barriers in the arts, challenging the notion that sight is intrinsic to the experience and enjoyment of art.”

BlindArt, the groundbreaking charity behind Sense & Sensuality, has gained worldwide recognition for promoting contemporary works of art by visually impaired and sighted artists, showcasing them side by side and challenging the public to tell the difference. Supporters of BlindArt include Estelle Morris, The Rt. Hon. The Baroness Morris of Yardley and the leading British artist Gary Sargeant, who as a registered blind artist has experienced many of the artistic barriers that the BlindArt initiative aims to overcome. 75 works have been chosen from an extensive list of over 600 artists who submitted work. Sense & Sensuality is also set to illuminate the international arena in 2007, when the collection is taken to New York for its US debut at the city’s famous Public Library.
