Celebrating art for and by the visually impaired
and challenging perceptions of artistic vision.
Sense2Sense Education Project, September 2006
The Sense2Sense project was a collaboration between BlindArt and Somerset House Learning Department sponsored by Sky. Six students from the Joseph Clarke School for Visually Impaired Children, Highams Park, and six sighted students from Clement Danes School, Covent Garden were ‘buddied’ in pairs.

The project had four stages:
  1. Visual impairment training at St. Clement Dane School; 29 sighted children were taught about visual impairment and gained skills for helping visually impaired people.
  2. Visit to Sense & Sensuality exhibition followed by a boat trip along the Thames to the Courtauld Institute of Art Gallery where the children choice a work to pair-up with a work they had seen in the BlindArt exhibition.
  3. Making day. The students in pairs made tactile works of art inspired by the works of art they had chosen at Sense & Sensuality and the Courtauld Gallery.
  4. Celebration. The children unveiled their completed art works for a mini-exhibition at Sense & Sensuality.
The project culminated in a DVD documentary of the children’s gallery visits, which now represents not only a permanent record along with their artworks of their creative collaboration, but also an example of the benefit of BlindArt’s method of pairing visually impaired and sighted children. BlindArt never divides its audience by visual ability, believing passionately that art should be enjoyed by all together equally. The advantage of bringing sighted and visually impaired children together is that they can learn from each others’ responses to art works.

Sense2Sense was therefore a valuable experience for the visually impaired participants who got the opportunity to experience artworks directly through touch and the benefit of having artworks explained by their sighted peers. The sighted children benefited from visual impairment training and had a unique opportunity to learn how to guide visually impaired people. An unexpected benefit was that many of the children formed strong bonds of friendship, and will stay in touch long after the end of the project. Sense2Sense therefore provided not only a unique experience and life-long skills for the children involved, but also helped to forge new friendships. We are confident that the children will continue to be involved with the visual arts, creatively and receptively.
