Boundless 1

This May, BlindArt holds an exhibition of its Permanent Collection of inclusive artworks at the Menier Chocolate Factory as part of Boundless festival a celebration of inclusive arts, culture and sport in Southwark. www.southwark.gov.uk/boundless

BlindArt is an innovative, all-inclusive charity, founded in 2004, that promotes contemporary works of art that can be explored through all five senses, especially touch. The BlindArt Permanent Collection is the world’s first permanent showcase of visual art accessible to visually impaired people, and includes paintings, sculpture, installations and other works of art. Promoting artistic excellence regardless of visual ability.

The BlindArt Permanent Collection provides a platform for the works of both visually impaired and sighted artists on an equal footing, showcasing exceptional works that appeal to a multitude of senses; questioning the nature of artistic perception and whether visual ability is essential for artistic excellence and aesthetic appreciation.

The exhibition is part of ‘Boundless’, a festival celebrating inclusive arts, culture and sport, in Southwark, which will take place across the borough in May and June. www.southwark.gov.uk//boundless

After a successful run at the New York Public Library in October 2006, selected works from the collection will be shown at the Menier Chocolate Factory: the first exhibition of the collection in the UK.

Address: Menier Chocolate Factory, 51-53 Southwark Street, London SE1
Tube: London Bridge
Opening Hours: 10am-6pm
Admission: Free

The collection comprises 25 works, acquired from BlindArt’s Sense & Sensuality 2005 and 2006 exhibitions. Only three works were purchased through the BlindArt Permanent Collection purchase prize, all others were kindly donated by the artists, demonstrating great support for BlindArt’s work.

“I am thrilled as I really believe in the work and approach of BlindArt, and know that Life Line 01 will have a good life in your hands.” Linda Lierberman, Artist

“I’m really delighted that you’re happy to have Chromosphere as part of the BlindArt permanent collection.  I know it will be put to excellent use so to speak. It makes all the hard work making it worthwhile.” Jenny Cordy, Artist

All works in the collection come with visual descriptive text and large print and Braille labels to make them accessible to a diverse audience. All works can be explored through touch.

BlindArt’s aim is to tour the collection nationally and internationally so that it can be enjoyed by as many people as possible. It will be exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Wales in 2008.
