The Fair
www.artlondon.net
This year, Art London is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Art London has always strived to combine connoisseurship with a welcoming and unintimidating atmosphere. So on display this year are key Modern British artists such as Graham Sutherland, Barbara Hepworth, Terry Frost, Henry Moore and John Piper- alongside British painters from an earlier period like Walter Sickert and Philip Wilson Steer, and major international names including Arman and André Lhote.

On the contemporary front, as well as artists from all over the UK and Europe, the range extends from Aboriginal and Inuit art through to Asian artists including from Japan and China and, for the first time this year, North Africa and the Arab world are represented. Art London has always encouraged solo shows, a concept which it pioneered amongst art fairs, and this edition is no exception, with nine of these.

The fair prides itself on its museum-quality, non-selling Special Exhibitions. This year’s is dedicated to Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, a substantial, if occasionally overlooked, figure in post-war British Modernism. Although she has had survey shows at Tate St Ives in 2000 and 2005, this is the first opportunity for art lovers in London and the South East to view such a comprehensive body of Barns-Graham’s work.

Another charming characteristic of Art London is the Sculpture Garden set in the beautiful grounds of the Royal Hospital. For the first time, this is devoted to just one artist, Lynn Chadwick- whose monumental ‘Beasts’ form a dramatic guard of honour for visitors to the fair.
